It's usually easier
It's usually easier to beg forgiveness than to ask permission - and often more effective.

If (next of many If's)
If we'd taken control of the high orbitals in the 1970's (like we should have, and easily could have), we wouldn't have these problems today.

Now why did I think of this?

"What kind of peace?"
"What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace - - the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living -- the kind that enables man and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children - - not merely peace for Americans by peace for all men and women - - not merely peace in our time but peace for all time.
So, let us not be blind to our differences - - but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal. "

"Don't Be A Prick."
"Don't Be A Prick."
That guides you through 95% of all ethically questionable situations. Of course, this depends on how you define "prick".
Then too, there's that pesky other 5%.
Good Luck - but Don't Be Another Prick!

Managers and Delusion
"Managers who don't have a plan to regularly talk to everyone on their team are deluded. They believe they are going to learn what is going on in their group through some magical organizational osmosis and they won't. Ideas will not be discovered, talent will be ignored, and the team will slowly begin to believe what they think does not matter, and the team is the company." "

"Your enemy is never...."
"Your enemy is never a villain in his own mind. Keep this in mind; it may offer a way to make him your friend. If not, you can kill him without hate - and quickly."
" It's amazing..." (mature wisdom)
"It's amazing how much mature wisdom resembles being 'too tired'."

I'm already dead
A friend at work asks rhetorically, in passing, "How's it going?"
"Waiting to die", I answer.
She freezes, then quickly motions me to a more private place to speak. "What the hell do you mean by That!"
"Just hanging, drifting, not interested in anything, almost no responsibilities except myself, middle aged, no goals or plans. Burned out on trying to date at 47, all these wierdos in Manhattan and even Long Beach, yet it's so hard to leave. How the hell can you be this bored in NYC?"
She pulls my ear close to her lips as she whispers, "You're already dead..."

"Homo Loquacious"
Human beings are not rational. "Homo Sapiens" is the wrong classification - "Homo Loquacious" is more accurate. Most of us do nothing but constantly jabber meaningless drivel.
It's 8:03 AM, I'm getting on the train. Half of my fellow commuters are talking on their cellphones. What the hell are they talking about, and with whom? They just left the house TEN minutes ago!
What has happened in the 10 previous minutes that they need to call and tell someone? JUST SHUT UP, already!
The person you are talking to probably feels as I do.
You want an example? Go here OverheardInNY to get your fill of drivel.
And JUST SHUT UP already!

Anyone who studies history...
"Anyone who studies history eventually comes up against the same cruel irony ... Man has probably spent more time killing his fellows 'in God's name' than for any other single reason... I know He loves us, but we must be a terrible disappointment to Him from time to time."
History does not record
"History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it."
Nursing
"Nursing does not diminish the beauty of a woman's breasts; it enhances their charm by making them look lived in and happy. "
A "pacifist male"
"A 'pacifist male' is a contradiction in terms. Most self-described 'pacifists' are not pacific; they simply assume false colors. When the wind changes, they hoist the Jolly Roger."
Delusions
"Delusions are often functional. A mother's opinions about her children's beauty, intelligence, goodness, et cetera ad nauseum, keep her from drowning them at birth.""
A fake fortuneteller
"A fake fortuneteller can be tolerated. But an authentic soothsayer should be shot on sight. Cassandra did not get half the kicking around she deserved."
It has long been known
"It has long been known that one horse can run faster than another - but which one? Differences are crucial."
There
"There is no conclusive evidence of life after death. But there is no evidence of any sort against it. Soon enough you will know. So why fret about it?"
By the data to date
"By the data to date there is only one animal in the galaxy dangerous to man - man himself. So he must supply his own competition. He has no enemy to help him."
